I am neither alfacinha, nor Portuguese, but a European citizen

Au Pair (work)
The sun was setting down and painted the sky with golden and pink strokes while I heard my father telling fantastic stories of his time in the army, in the paratroopers. These stories filled my imagination of courage, adventure and ambition. It was then that the seed of dissatisfaction and the desire to know other realities began to germinate.
Time passed, I grew older and an afternoon at the Portuguese Youth Institute I saw an ad looking for Au Pairs to go to England. I did not even know what an Au Pair was, but the idea of going to England seemed great and maybe I could enroll there at university.
Soon my bags were packed and September next, off I went with my father, who wanted to know and evaluate the family where I would live and work for the follow ing year. The evaluation was positive and a week later my father returned home, leaving me to live one of the most fulfilling times of my life.
Looking after the children was easy, my host family treated me well and soon I felt as one family member. The host father was Iraqi and the host mother English. For a year I did not eat pork and observe fasting during Ramadan. It was an amazing experience for someone who had been brought up in a very Catholic environment. Besides that I managed to pass two English Cambridge certificates and met wonderful friends from all over Europe. I also realized that I was still too young to leave my country and my family and I returned to Portugal at the end of the program.
September next I was a European Studies rooky at the Faculty of Arts in Lisbon. I had met so many people from all over Europe that I wanted now to understand better the European project. It was during that year in England that I started to become a European citizen and as my host mother told me I also gained itchy fee! Since then I lived in three other countries and travel constantly. Also I do not forget Socrates’s quote at the tube station in “Cidade Universitária” in Lisbon:
“I am neither Athenian nor Greek, but a citizen of the world.”
It is exactly how I feel in Europe:
“I am neitehr alfacinha (nickname given to Lisbon inhabitants), nor Portuguese, but a European citizen”
My experiences as AU Pair, Erasmus student, European voluntary and Leonardo da Vinci trainee not only changed my view of the world, helped me to grow as a person and influenced my brothers and cousins who then also participated in similar programmes . Today our family is quite international and there are Poles, Spaniards, Americans, Canadians and Africans. And to think it all started with the stories of the paratroopers …

O sol poente cobria a tarde de matizes dourados e rosados enquanto eu ouvia o meu pai a contar as histórias fantásticas do seu tempo na tropa, nos paraquedistas. Estas histórias enchiam o meu imaginário infantil de coragem, aventura e ambição de ir mais além. Foi entao que a semente da insatisfação e a vontade de conhecer outras realidades comecou a germinar.
O tempo passou, eu fui crescendo e uma tarde no IPJ vi um anúncio em que estavam a procurar Au Pairs para Inglaterra. Eu nem sabia o que era uma Au Pair, mas a ideia de ir para Inglaterra parecia genial e quem sabe podia entrar lá na Universidade.
Em dois tempos as malas estavam preparadas e em Setembro lá fui eu com o meu pai, que queria conhecer e avaliar a família onde eu ia morar e trabalhar no ano seguinte. A avaliação foi positiva e passado uma semana o meu pai regressou a casa, deixando-me a amadurecer naquele canto inglês.
Tomar conta das crianças era fácil, a minha família tratava-me muito bem e integrou-me verdadeiramente na vida familiar deles. O pai de acolhimento era iraquiano e a mãe inglesa. Durante um ano não comi carne de porco e cumpri o ramadão. Foi uma experiência incrível para alguém que tinha sido criada num meio muito católico. Além disso, neste ano consegui obter dois certificados de inglês da Cambridge e conheci amigos maravilhosos vindos de toda a Europa. Também percebi que ainda era muito nova para deixar o meu país e a minha família e voltei para Portugal no final do programa.
Em Setembro seguinte entrei na Faculdade de Letras em Lisboa, para Estudos Europeus. Tinha conhecido tanta gente de toda a Europa, que queria agora perceber melhor o projecto europeu. Naquele ano em Inglaterra comecei-me a tornar numa cidadã europeia e como me disse a minha “mãe” inglesa ganhei “itchy feet”, ou seja fiquei com comichão nos pés! Desde então já vivi em três outros países e viajo constantemente. Também não me esqueço do citado de Sócrates na estação de metro na cidade universitária em Lisboa:
“Não sou nem ateniense, nem grego, mas sim um cidadão do mundo.”
Pois é exactamente assim que eu me sinto na Europa:
“Nao sou alfacinha, nem portuguesa, mas sim uma cidadã europeia”
As minhas experiências enquanto AU Pair, estudante Erasmus, voluntária europeia e estagiára Leonardo da Vinci, não só mudaram a minha visão do mundo, ajudaram-me a crescer como pessoa, mas também influenciaram os meus irmãos e primos que depois também participaram em programas similares. Hoje a nossa família é completamente internacional e há polacos, espanhóis, americanos, canadianos e africanos.
