Leonardo experience for two: mum and daughter

A story by Inna.

Country of origin Germany

Country of destination: UK

Few years ago, when I found out that there are possiLeonie&Innabilities to do the internship in foreign country, I thought that this was impossible for me: as that time I was a young mother and therefore bound with it.

However, I got interested and looked for ways and chances how to realise this opportunity.

For me, one thing clear : I couldn’t go abroad without my baby; none of us would be able to bear it.

I decided to take my daughter abroad with me. Actually in mobility projects, parents are not supported financially for their children. I needed to take all the financial responsibility of taking care of my daughter abroad and as I am a single mom. That was not an easy task.

At that time, my daughter was 4.5 years old and I had to organise a care service for her while I was on training This was another hardship in Derry (Northern Ireland), UK. Though I was luck, my daughter was allowed to go to first grade in school and I did not have to pay additionally for expensive care services.

My stay in Derry for sure enriched my professional and personal skills. Before my internship in Derry, I hardly could speak English; slowly I learned it better and now the difference is obvious. My placement helped me to widen my professional skills also. Though for me the most important was my personal development. For me it was a big challenge to take my child with me, but this challenge brought me to personal development. That time I had very mixed fillings, I was very happy that I got the chance to participate in mobility project but at the same time the fears was following me, because I was responsible not only for myself, but for my child as well. This experience had a positive influence not only me, but also my daughter as well and both of us are very proud of ourselves.

I would recommend to all the parents, to take this experience as it supports their personal developement and their children’s development
