Francesca- Leonardo in Vienna- an unexpected turning point

A story by Francesca Montevecchi; Country of origin: Italy; Destination country: Austria

I have always been fascinated by exchange and mobility programs. My first experience was an Erasmus in Portugal in 2009, in Porto. Enthusiastic about the possibility to get in touch with so many people from Europe and merging our cultures in a colorful melting pot of languages, traditions and habits, I decided to move to Austria in 2011 and enrich myself with a new experience.

At that time I had recently completed my studies – a master degree in environmental engineering at the University Sapienza of Rome, and I was looking for my first job. Nevertheless, I knew no single word in German, still a pre-requisite in many working fields in this country.

After 3 months of unsuccessful CVs submission and a little frustration growing in me for realizing that my attempt was not a cup of tea, I still didn’t give up and applied for a Leonardo grant through the Accademia Europea di Firenze. The process went through pretty fast, and one month after my application submission I was landing in Vienna, excited to get in touch with Amadeus – our hosting association- and know all the details about the project.

The grant comprised accommodation, a 1 month German course and a 2 months internship at a local organization. Through Amadeus I had the chance to be contacted by the University of Economics and Business of Vienna (WU-Wien). My internship dealt with research on environmental technologies and European research projects as FP7. After this time, I was proposed to prolong my stay at the University, where I currently work as research fellow.

Thanks to my work I have the chance to take part into European research projects on sustainable development, participate to international conferences on environmental thematic, and collaborate for important European institutions as DG-Environment, the Committee of Regions and the Austrian Ministry of the Environment.

Obviously, the Leonardo experience radically changed the pathway of my life- three years has been already gone and I grew up professionally and personally, having to integrate in a new country, learning a new language (that I warmly recommend, if you intend to settle down in a country for a while), building up a new life, a new network of friends, getting used to live away from family and home town….but still, it has been an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone who wants to get know the world and open up his mind!
