Mobilities have been for me an absolutely vital experience

When I started studying at the University I was sure that I wanted to take every opportunity to participate in exchange programmes abroad. It was a very useful way of seeing the world, other cultures, other languages ​​and different people. Of course, my motivation was also to become a professional with a special added value; that value brought by these kinds of experience.

During my studies I participated in two different exchange programmes abroad, first in the US and the second in Brussels. In the United States I spent only 1 year and returned to finish my degree; however, in Brussels I stayed longer. By that time I knew I wanted to focus my career towards the European institutions, so Brussels was the ideal place to achieve my goal. There I finished my degree and did some specialized postgraduate studies. From there my career in the field of the EU began.

Both the experiences contributed in a very positive way in my life, from both points of view, personal as well as professional. Personally I could tell many anecdotes (funny, sad, interesting, surprising) I would never end; but what I can say is that every one of those days abroad, have “made” me as a person, they have contributed As in much who I am today, therefore we can say that mobilities have been for me an absolutely vital experience.

As for the professional is concerned, I feel very fortunate today to work in a field that I like, that I chose. That’s what brought me professionally these experiences: the possibility to choose a career that suits me.

Necessarily these experiences make you feel closer to other European citizens and the world, you realize that there are many things that unite us, separate us and enrich us.

I think a mobility experience is a highly positive experience for everyone, so I think it should be mandatory in almost all levels of education. The implicit learning and learnt lessons are such that it is difficult to replace it with any type of alternative education. You have to go and live.

Cuando comencé a estudiar en la Universidad tenía muy claro que quería aprovechar todas las oportunidades que hubiera para realizar períodos de formación en el extranjero.  Era una forma muy provechosa de conocer mundo, otras culturas, otros idiomas  y personas diferentes. Por supuesto, mi motivación era también ir formándome como una profesional con un valor añadido especial; ese valor que te aporta una experiencia como esa.

Durante mis estudios universitarios realicé dos estancias en el extranjero, la primera en EE.UU. y la segunda en Bruselas. En Estados Unidos estuve sólo 1 año y me volví para terminar mi titulación; sin embargo, en Bruselas me quedé más tiempo. En aquel momento ya tenía claro que quería enfocar mi carrera profesional hacia las instituciones europeas, por tanto Bruselas era el lugar ideal para conseguir mi objetivo. Allí terminé mi Licenciatura y realicé unos estudios de posgrado especializados. A partir de ahí comenzó mi carrera laboral en el campo de la UE.

Las experiencias me aportaron infinidad de cosas tanto desde el punto de vista personal, como profesional. A nivel personal podría contar tantas anécdotas (divertidas, tristes, interesantes, sorprendentes) que no acabaría nunca, pero lo que sí puedo decir es que todos y cada uno de esos días en el extranjero, me han “hecho” como persona, han contribuido en mucha medida a quién soy hoy, por tanto, se puede decir que las movilidades han sido para mí una experiencia absolutamente vital.

En cuanto a lo profesional se refiere, me siento muy afortunada hoy en día por trabajar en un campo que me gusta, que yo elegí. Eso es lo que me aportó profesionalmente estas experiencias: la posibilidad de elegir desarrollar una profesión que me satisface.

Necesariamente este tipo de experiencias te hacen sentir más cerca de otros ciudadanos europeos, y del mundo, te hacen ver que hay muchas cosas que nos unen, que nos separan y que nos enriquecen.

Me parece que una experiencia de movilidad es una vivencia tan positiva para una persona que creo debería ser obligatorio en prácticamente todos los niveles educativos. El aprendizaje y la riqueza implícitos son tales, que es complicado suplirlo con cualquier tipo de formación alternativa. Tienes que irte y vivir.
