Our mission was not “giving the fish” : Ângela in Guiné Bissau

In life, there are experiences that go much beyond the personal level. As a punch in the stomach that takes your breath away, a feeling of bewilderment and not wanting to believe in what is happening… that is what happened to me on August of 2011, when I went and lived the greatest adventure of my life: 28 days volunteering in Guinea Bissau (GuiBi)!

The invitation came out of thin air, in June of the same year, from the Promundo coordinator – Fernando Castro. Fernando was passionate for GuiBi, the land where he came to pass away, in this same mission.

As soon as the last arrangements where done, it was time to embark in the dream.

When I arrived, I felt in a way that I have no words to describe. I lived 28 days of everything! Surprise and chock, happiness and sorrow, will to do so much more that what I was doing, because it all seemed insufficient. From the awful and intense smell to the smile of children, everything delighted me.

The biggest challenge and where I really felt useful was in Bijagós – Sogá Island. The purest of Africa’s.

Our mission was not “giving the fish” and it was far from merely “teaching how to fish”. It was much deeper: to teach how to gather the materials to build the fishing rod, teach how to fish and, for last, the best way to cook it. We worked directly with the people, never imposing… the result was beautiful! The eyes were brighter and the future seemed much friendlier.

In my suitcase I brought more dreams, more wills and the heart filled with faces I can never or want to forget.

For the rest… for the rest everything is as simple as “dream and do it”!
