Alicia – I had such an amazing Erasmus in Ireland!

Destination: Ireland.

My name is Alicia from Seville, Spain. I took part in my mobility experience in Cork, Ireland, 1999 for one academic year. I chose to apply because my sister had a similar experience and recommended it to me. I had good grades and wanted to learn English, but I didn’t think it would be as life changing as it was.

When I just arrived to Ireland I couldn’t understand the taxi man and held my hands out with British coins and told him to take whatever he needed. To this day I don’t know what I paid for that taxi!! If I didn’t have to return to Spain for my fourth academic year I would have stayed a lot longer because I was having such a great experience. I had friends from all over the world and not only that but I had met my boyfriend!

This experience really felt like a breaking point in my life. I was already living alone in Seville, so this was not a problem in Ireland. However, living alone in Ireland a different culture and language, and having to adapt to their customs was a wild experience. I was surviving in another environment with another language! From this experience I felt like I could achieve anything. I am much stronger as a person. No challenge I face is a scary one because I have done the hardest thing I believe a person can do! It gives you a sense of empowerment which would be difficult to get at such a young age from any other experience. I met my boyfriend in the first week of living in Ireland and became boyfriend and girlfriend within the first two months. I met a lot of people who became my family and made it a fantastic experience for me. I have friends from all over Europe not just Ireland.

Before going to Ireland, I had studied English at school and high school, also at home through music and movies but I was not ready to study in Ireland. At the University, being Erasmus, I was studying Geography but I couldn’t understand the teachers so I would copy over other students shoulders and study after classes. I would take any word I could hear or see and completed all my coursework’s and exams in English using English textbooks. I am very proud of my achievement. I had problems returning to study the fourth year in Seville because the modules I studied did not match to the modules I was expected to have studied. Therefore in my final year of study I had to study extra modules to compensate!

Professionally, my English had improved enough to be able to work in the language from this day on. I have used English for the past 12 years. My first career was as a geographical consulter where I arranged tourist apartments in Seville. Now I have worked with ONECO for 10 years whereby English is absolutely essential for my work!

Mobility definitely helped me feel like a European citizen. It’s very important to me and I am very happy about it. I have a European family, my Children are bi-lingual and we have two countries where we feel at home. We can be ourselves in both countries with no fright. I have learnt that no matter what country we are born we are all the same. It doesn’t matter what skin colour, accent, race, religion, nationality etc. The people are not different! I would recommend this experience to anybody and I hope my children do the same!

Me llamo Alicia  y vivo en Sevilla, España. Tuve mi experiencia de movilidad en Cork, Irlanda, durante el año académico de 1999. Me decidí a solicitar una beca Erasmus porque mi hermana tuvo una experiencia similar y me lo recomendó. Yo tenía buenas calificaciones y quería aprender inglés, pero en ningún momento pensé que sería un cambio de vida como en realidad fue.

Recién llegada a Irlanda, en el aeropuerto, cogí un taxi y me era imposible entender al taxista cuando me dijo cuánto costaba. Le enseñé un puñado de monedas británicas y le dije que cogiera lo que necesitara. A día de hoy no sé lo que pagué por ese taxi!. Si no hubiera tenido que regresar a España para mi cuarto año académico me habría quedado mucho más tiempo allí porque estaba teniendo una gran experiencia. Hice amigos de todas partes del mundo y no sólo eso, sino que además había conocido a mi novio!

Esta experiencia fue un punto de inflexión en mi vida. Aunque yo ya estaba viviendo sola en Sevilla, el hecho de vivir en un nuevo entorno, con una cultura tan distinta y comunicándome en otro idioma supuso una experiencia extraordinaria. De esta experiencia salí mucho más fuerte y sintiendo que a partir de ese momento podría lograr cualquier cosa en mi vida. Además, conocí a mi novio en la primera semana de vida en Irlanda, y a un montón de gente que se convirtió en mi familia de allí… ahora tengo amigos de toda Europa, y no sólo de Irlanda!

Antes de ir a Irlanda, yo ya había estudiado inglés en la escuela y en el instituto. Además, como me gustaba mucho, en casa veía películas en inglés y escuchaba música. Pero cuando llegué a la Universidad en Irlanda me di cuenta de que todo eso no era suficiente y de que tendría que trabajar duro para conseguir aprobar mis asignaturas de Geografía!

Al principio, como no entendía a los profesores, tenía que copiar los apuntes a mis compañeros y luego en casa buscar las palabras y completar las notas con los libros de texto. Fue un esfuerzo increíble, y estoy muy orgullosa de haberlo conseguido!

Al volver a Sevilla fue también duro porque no coincidían todas las asignaturas y tuve que estudiar prácticamente de nuevo todo el cuarto año para compensar! Así que en mi último año de carrera tuve que estudiar el doble!

Profesionalmente, mi inglés ha mejorado lo suficiente como para ser capaz de trabajar en este idioma a partir de entonces. Llevo trabajando en inglés los últimos 12 años. Desde hace 10 trabajo en ONECO donde el inglés es absolutamente necesario!

Esta experiencia de movilidad sin duda me ayudó a sentirme una ciudadana europea. Fue muy importante en mi vida y estoy muy feliz de haberla llevado a cabo. Gracias a esta experiencia me casé y tuve dos hijas que ahora son bilingües, mi marido y yo somos también bilingües, y tenemos dos países en los que todos nos sentimos en casa. Podemos decir que somos una familia europea.  Además, con esta experiencia aprendí que da igual donde nacemos, qué color de piel tengamos, nuestro acento, raza, o religión… las personas no somos diferentes! Yo recomendaría esta experiencia a cualquiera y espero que mis hijas hagan un día lo mismo!
