Althought friends and colleagues came back with stories and unforgettable experiences of their Erasmus, but I decided not to go abroad until I ended my career as a biologist, that’s when I definitely got my time.
Fate was clear, I had always wanted to live in Poland. Through the European Voluntary Service EVS, I found an environmental organization, which welcomed me and integrated me in the culture of wonder. I spent there four very full months in which I discovered a very different culture, a country with a lot of history, a language for experts and people who open you the doors as they had known you for a long time. It was a great time to think about my future and know myself more.
The experience of living in another country was totally rewarding, and as I went back to Spain I started searching for a doctorate in another European country. Within a few weeks, I realized how important it is to meet new people, my mentor EVS gave me the contact of someone who worked in my study area (mycology), this time in Vienna. Without thinking a lot about that I got in touch with the company and decided to carry out my internship through the Leonardo da Vinci scholarships.
From the very beginning I found Vienna is a cosy and young city to live yin, with friendly people and many new opportunities. Step by step I started integrating into the community, customs and I was feeling at home.
Since two years I’m working as a lab technician at the university, completing a master’s and doctorate in botany.It is clear to me that that “doors”appear to you when you are trying to find them and open when you put effort into opening them. Every step in life will offer something different. This is how I see the importance of traveling and living surrounded by a different culture, it si at the beginning complicated but afterward rewarding.
Desde España a traves de Polonia hacia Viena
Amigos y compañeros volvía con historias y experiencias inolvidables de sus erasmus, sin embargo yo no decidí dar el salto al extranjero hasta que no terminé mi carrera como bióloga, fue entonces cuando llego mi momento.El destino lo tenía claro, desde siempre había querido vivir en Polonia. A través del Servicio de Voluntariado Europeo EVS, encontré una organización medio ambiental, la cual me acogió e íntegro en la cultura de maravilla. Fueron cuatro meses muy completos, en los cuales descubrí una cultura muy diferente, un país con muchísima historia, un idioma para expertos y personas que te abren las puertas como si te conocieran de toda la vida. Fue un momento estupendo, para reflexionar sobre mi futuro y conocerme más a mí misma. La experiencia de vivir en otro país fue totalmente gratificante, así en cuanto regresé a España me puse a la búsqueda de un doctorado en algún otro país europeo. A las pocas semanas, me di cuenta de lo importante que es conocer gente nueva, mi mentora del EVS me proporcionó el contacto de alguien que trabajaba en mí mismo área de estudio (micología), esta vez en Viena. Sin pensarlo me puse en contacto con la empresa y decidimos llevar acabo mis practicas a través de las becas Leonardo da Vinci. Desde el principio Viena me pareció una ciudad cómoda y joven para vivir, con gente acogedora y muchas oportunidades nuevas. Poco a poco me fui integrando en la comunidad, en las costumbres y sintiéndome como en casa. De esto hace ya dos años, ahora estoy trabajando como técnico de laboratorio en la universidad, terminando un master en Botánica y el doctorado está más próximo que antes. Tengo claro que las puertas aparecen cuando te arriesgas a buscarlas y se abren cuando pones empeño en abrirlas. Cada paso en la vida te ofrecerá algo diferente. Así es como veo la importancia de viajar y vivir rodeado de una cultura distinta, al principio cuesta, pero todo tiene su recompensa.From Spain through Poland towards Vienna
