Joyful summers thanks to mobility!

During my scholars years of Education, and before I started the University, I had the opportunity to travel to England, specifically to Bournemouth, to study English lessons at a summer school.

While I was there, I was staying with a family. I attended classes in the morning and we had activities and excursions with other students from other European countries in the afternoon and weekends.

Despite my short age and the fact that I was not really aware about what was happening to me at that time, these experiences have enriched me so much that I cannot imagine today, the life of a young person without a mobility experience in another country other than their own.

I remember how special it was for me to be able to communicate with everyone regardless of the country and the mother tongue he/she speaks, to be able to discover how was the lifestyle of other students in their countries of origin, how it was to live with an English family, to learn its customs and, above all, to know that we all had the same objective: learn to enjoy.

In fact, this Mobility experience made me fall in love with everything that represented Italy (the language, the country, the culture, the food). Also this experience made me to choose my university studies: English philology, and my working life as mobility coordinator, and opened my mind to understand other cultures other than mine on every trip that I can afford.

Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to enjoy an Erasmus or Leonardo grant that let me live that experience again but all this illusion conveyed to my little brother, thirteen years younger than me that could go to Finland for one academic year and made a Leonardo in London.

Furthermore, my son, aged 14, has already enjoyed his first experience of mobility, leaving two weeks in north London to take a course in English and that’s just the beginning.

Durante mis años de estudio de BUP y COU, antes de comenzar la universidad, tuve la oportunidad de irme varios veranos a Inglaterra (Reino Unido), concretamente a Bournemouth, a recibir clases de inglés en una escuela de verano.

Durante mi estancia allí, me alojaba con una familia, asistía a clases por la mañana y realizábamos actividades y excursiones con otros alumnos de otros países europeos de la escuela por la tarde y fines de semana.

A pesar de mi juventud y de no darme mucha cuenta de lo que me estaba pasando en aquel entonces, esas experiencias me han enriquecido de tal forma que no concibo, hoy en día, la vida de un joven sin una experiencia de movilidad en otro país distinto al suyo.

Recuerdo lo especial que era para mí el poder comunicarme con todo el mundo independientemente del país que fuera y del idioma natal que tuviera, el poder descubrir cómo era la forma de vida de los otros alumnos en sus países de origen, de cómo era convivir con una familia inglesa y de sus costumbres y de cómo teníamos todos el mismo objetivo, aprender disfrutando.

De hecho, a mí me hizo enamorarme de todo lo que representa Italia (su lengua, su país, su cultura, su comida), me encaminó a mis estudios, filología inglesa, y a mi vida laboral (coordinador de movilidad), y me abrió la mente para entender otras culturas distintas a las mías en cada viaje que puedo permitirme.

Por desgracia, no he tenido la oportunidad de disfrutar de una beca Erasmus o Leonardo da Vinci que me permitiera vivir esa experiencia de nuevo pero toda esa ilusión la transmití a mi hermano pequeño , trece años menor que yo, que sí pudo irse a Finlandia durante un año académico y realizar una Leonardo en Londres.

Aún más, mi hijo, de 14 años, ya ha disfrutado de su primera experiencia de movilidad, yéndose dos semanas al norte de Londres a realizar un curso de inglés y eso es solo el comienzo.
