A European Love Story <3
In 2002 I went on the trip of a life time, and it still has a positive effect on me to this day! I went to Italy coming from Seville, Spain scheduled for 10 months to study the Italian language and gain more valuable experiences in the field of Art. My degree was in Art, but there was no work in this field in Spain. Therefore, this experience was extremely valuable to me. But I got a lot more than I had ever bargained for!
Whilst studying Italian, I gained paid employment in the University canteen and then also in the local museum. This allowed me to stay one year extra having met the man of my dreams! There were much more opportunities for me to succeed in my dream career of Art in Italy. There was a bump in the road however, because the work was actually in Venice where they required the English language. My 6 month contract with the museum ended, so I had no choice but to return to Seville. I did a master in Administration and studied English. My Husband (YES WE GOT MARRIED) finished his studies and followed me to Seville. I had the idea of learning English and returning to Padova, however I found a job I love, working with European projects in Seville.
It is almost indescribable what this has brought to my life. I married the love of my life, learnt two languages, Italian and English; my confidence is through the roof and I learned how to make a life for myself. I was in contact with many different cultures which has given me a huge appreciation for other languages and how they think about the world. We huddled together as a family to look after each other and had some of the richest experiences together. I now have friends all over the world and value the fact that I am an EU citizen and this has given me so much pleasure. Without this experience I would just be a girl from Seville, without any awareness on what the world has to offer.
Professionally, this experience improved the way I connect and network with people. I learned to be responsible for the first time. I have can understand many different points of view from all different people. Now I am more tolerant of languages and cultures. This allows me to easily adapt my work ethic to any European role which would have been much more difficult or even impossible for me without this experience. Instead of learning one language as intended I learned two! Currently I work for ONECO in Spain, a European agency. I am in contact with different people every day.
I would highly recommend this experience to everybody I love. It enriches you in every sense of your life. I appreciate the world and my husband has been able to experience this as well. Having experienced my mobility adventure, he took it upon himself to move to Seville and start his life with me. He shares the same vision as me with regards to mobility and would also recommend this to anyone! It is the scariest thing to do, moving to another country and adapting to new social rules and language, but we feel it is important not only in this economic climate but also for self growth and to understand this world around us.
Una historia de amor europea
En 2002 decidí hacer un cambio importante en mi vida que todavía tiene un efecto positivo en mí. Solicité una beca Erasmus y dejé mi ciudad natal, Sevilla (España) para vivir durante 10 meses en Padua (Italia). El objetivo de mi viaje era estudiar italiano y adquirir experiencia en el ámbito artístico. Me acababa de licenciar en Historia del Arte y encontrar trabajo en España en este sector era bastante difícil.
Mientras estudiaba italiano, empecé a trabajar en el comedor universitario y al cabo de los meses conseguí trabajo en un museo de Padua. Esto me permitió prolongar mi estancia en Italia 1 año más y estaba muy ilusionada porque había conocido en esta ciudad al hombre de mis sueños!!!!. Sin embargo, me encontré un bache en el camino. Cuando terminó mi contrato de 6 meses en el museo, intenté buscar trabajo en Venecia pero era necesario hablar inglés correctamente. Así que decidí volver a Sevilla y hacer un máster en Administración mientras estudiaba inglés. Mi marido (sí! nos hemos casado!!!) terminó sus estudios y me siguió a Sevilla. La idea era aprender inglés y volver a Padua, sin embargo, encontré un trabajo que me encanta en una empresa de proyectos europeos en Sevilla.
Es casi increíble lo que esta experiencia me ha aportado. Aprendí dos idiomas, adquirí más confianza en mí misma, aprendí a vivir sola gestionando mi día a día y me casé con el amor de mi vida. Estuve en contacto con muchas culturas diferentes que me han hecho apreciar otros puntos de vista. Conocí a muchas personas que también estaban viviendo una experiencia de movilidad y nos tratábamos como si fuéramos familia, apoyándonos continuamente. Esas amistades, con las que he vivido unas experiencias tan ricas, las sigo conservando. Ahora tengo amigos de todo el mundo y valoro el hecho de que soy una ciudadana de la UE. Sin esta experiencia, seguiría siendo una chica de Sevilla, sin ninguna conciencia de lo que el mundo puede ofrecernos.
Actualmente trabajo en Sevilla en una consultoría de proyectos europeos que se llama ONECO y en mi día profesional me relaciono con gente de muchos países europeos. En este sentido, la experiencia de movilidad me ha facilitado la manera en la que me relaciono con la gente en el ámbito laboral. Aprendí a ser responsable, a adoptar una actitud positiva, soy capaz de entender diferentes puntos de vista, relacionándome de una manera más empática. Ahora soy más tolerante con otras culturas y esto me permite adaptarme fácilmente a mi trabajo. Además, en lugar de aprender un idioma aprendí dos!
Personalmente, recomendaría esta experiencia a todo el mundo puesto que te enriquece en todos los sentidos. Además, mi estancia en Italia benefició a mi marido también puesto que pudo vivir su propia experiencia de movilidad cuando se vino a Sevilla conmigo. Él comparte la misma visión que yo en lo que respecta a la movilidad y también se lo recomendaría a cualquiera! Aunque, al principio, puede resultar difícil trasladarse a otro país y adaptarse a las nuevas normas sociales y al idioma, creemos que es importante dar el paso para el crecimiento de uno mismo y para comprender el mundo que nos rodea. Además, en la actual situación de crisis económica y laboral en la que vivimos, es una buena experiencia para contar con más oportunidades laborales.
