Lidia- Musician in the city of music

A story by Lidia Country of origin: Italy Destination Country: Austria 2012

My story started two years ago, after a long period spent searching for something which I could have defined “my place”. When you spend all your life cultivating your dream for Music, there is only one place where you can find your way: Vienna. I started to play the piano when I was 8 years old as a game and almost with the same spirit I applied for the European mobility programme that has completely changed my professional and personal life. Only if you spend over 16 years of your life together with the most beautiful pages of music written by composers like Mozart, Beethoven or Schumann can you understand the emotion to walk in the same streets and the same places where they found the ideas for those extraordinary melodies. I still remember the day when I landed at the Schwechat- Vienna airport, lost into the million German words written everywhere which I didn’t understand as well as the first time I saw the amazing buildings of the Townhall and the Parliament along the Burgring from the taxi windows. The day after, I felt at home with my new “family”: my Spanish roommates and the

guys living next door, with whom I shared the first part of my experience in Vienna with; exploring the whole city, learning my first German words and practicing my rusty English. I was almost shocked, the first time I was in the Staatsoper looking at all the people there listening and enjoying the Italian Operas of the Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci… Amazing!!!!! In that moment I did not know that, a year afterwards I would have worked with the director of the Children’s Opera School of the Vienna State Opera. I jumped into my new life and I left all my fears and doubts behind me. I started to work for a theatre in the centre of the city in the back and front office, meeting new colleagues who soon became friends. After that I started my experience in an International School of Music where I could share my passion for music with my students and at the same time design a Music Programme targeted at making them achieve a professional level of performance. Today I am still working as a Piano Teacher and Music Coordinator of this great school in Vienna and every day I listen to my excited students calling “Ms. Lidia” who represents an example for their life. I teach them and at the same time I learn from them constantly. Every day starts for me as a new challenge and opportunity to personally grow with them. Today I can definitely say that I found my place…!
