IMG_0336Why did you decide to go to Berlin?

I finished my studies in Spain and I wanted to live new experiences, to be free in my choices and decisions, I was very curious about new places, leave my comfort zone and challenge myself to speak the new language. Before Berlin and during the University, I spent an Erasmus year in south Germany and the experience was fulfilling! During that year, I visited Berlin and I really fell in love with the city. At that moment, I said to me: “I want to live here!”. After that, I kept looking for opportunities to move to Berlin and I found a grant for internship that was a support for new challenges outside Spain.

Why did you decide to stay in Berlin?

There are a lot of important things that you put on scales and at last they play big role: I started feeling comfortable with German, I was offered a job that presented me new challenges but above all, the city itself is amazing (even though I question myself each Winter, why I am not somewhere else where the sun shines?), people I met, had an influence on my life and I had (and still keep to have) the feeling that there are a lot of things here to be discovered!

Do you feel that mobility helped you to feel like European citizen?

Oficially I am an European citizen and I also was getting profit – and I still do- from different benefits of the EU Commision made for the social progress and from the structure that the European Union develops for the strengthening the European identity through common values like: free movement, peace between member states, abscence of customs duties, better educational opportunities (grants, studies in other universities, etc.) and of a wider labor market.
On the other hand, I also think that there are a lot of weak points to discuss as the term “to feel like a European citizen” itself. Nowadays, there are many basic rights of the European citizen that are not respected or institutions that are not trustful. As long as the situation stays unchanged, as a citizen of EU I find it difficult to feel represented enough through the concept, that from my point of view, doesn’t assure all of the values and rights that are promoted.

I really know, that trough my personal experience and my current location I feel closer to other cultures and people from different countries and regions, whom I could not have met if I hadn’t come to Berlin. I get a unique possibility to talk with them and discuss not only European realties, but also non-European cultural and political situations,  look at the things from the eyes of non-European citizens and only from one side. Everybody knows how multi-culti is Berlin and that here you can find people from everywhere. This explosion of cultures made me aware of how diverse the society can be and how exciting this is.

Would you advise a mobility experience to your friends/family? Everyone who knows me knows that I do that! Strongly! I not only recommend it, I do it professionally. With the organization, I am working for, we develop mobility projects and promote the mobility for young people and educators, teachers and young workers – definitely an important sector, who is going to pass on these values through next generations for the tolerance and remove barriers and prejudices between cultures. Actually we know how the labor market moves and grows; you can work in Germany, UK; Brazil, Canada or where the imagination, your attitudes or the opportunities carry you. There are barriers to overtake, fears to overcome or decisions to make but the balance is more than positive as doesn’t matter how long the stay abroad is, one will discover new aspects of him/her that will surprise him/her and motivate for further development.  If the idea of living in another country has already come to you just take your time and look for resources, information, support and keep in touch with people who inspire your new feelings and sensations!
