Luís – Leonardo experience in Belfast

After completing my second college degree on ISTEC in September 2013, my main purpose was to start working in order to acquire experience. Then I took notice by some colleagues and professors from by college of a programme called Leonardo Da Vinci, which I had never heard of, which was giving to newly graduated college students the opportunity to live and work in a different country of the European Union. Therefore, I attended the presentation of the program, and I found it very interesting, generally speaking, regarding the opportunity that was been giving to me at that moment: to live and work in a foreign country for the first time. So, after a period of reflection, in which I was struggling within myself about how exactly did I developed my English skills, or how could I manage to guide myself in a foreign country without the close support of my family and friends, I did apply to the Da Vinci exchange program, and luckily I was chosen to be one of the Portuguese participants to do a three month internship in the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Today, I absolutely know that I have made the right decision.
Concerning Belfast, I found it a beautiful small town, very friendly, full of stories and adventures to tell, as well as places to discover, where people are extremely nice and kind. My adaptation to the new environment was pretty easy, luckily I could always rely on those who travelled with me to Belfast as well as the northern Irish people, who gave me all the sympathy and support whenever I needed it. I specially have appreciated the architecture of Belfast, the nightlife of this beautiful city, and the typical Irish pubs, the ideal place to go in free times, where we can have some fun and relax. For that reasons, I highly recommend the city of Belfast to anyone who’s interested in go there to visit or even live and work, like I did.
In conclusion, the Da Vinci exchange program has definitely contributed to my personal and professional development, given the fact that I could learn new working methods, to overcome some difficult challenges, and mainly because it gave me the opportunity to know and interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, it allowed me to achieve greater autonomy and responsibility. Thus, I have absolutely no doubts that the whole experience was unforgettable and extremely rewarding for me, and for those who are thinking about applying to this exchange program, I can only say: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” – Joseph Campbell.

Em setembro de 2013, depois de ter finalizado o segundo curso no ISTEC, tinha como objectivo começar a trabalhar como forma de ganhar experiência. Através de alguns colegas e professores da faculdade, tomei conhecimento de um programa chamado Leonardo Da Vinci, o qual nunca tinha ouvido falar, e cuja finalidade passava por dar a oportunidade a jovens recém-licenciados de adquirir experiência profissional noutros países da União Europeia, o que ia de encontro aos meus objectivos. Assim, assisti à apresentação do programa, e considerei no geral muito interessante, na medida em que me lançava um desafio que nunca tinha atravessado: viver e trabalhar num país diferente do meu país de origem. Após um período de reflexão, em que me debati com a possibilidade de o meu domínio da língua inglesa não ser suficiente, ou de não ser capaz de me orientar num país estrangeiro sem o apoio de terceiros, resolvi arriscar e candidatei-me, tendo sido um dos felizes contemplados para embarcar nesta grande aventura na cidade de Belfast, sendo hoje para mim mais do que evidente que tomei a opção correcta.
Relativamente a Belfast, posso afirmar que se trata de uma cidade pequena e muito acolhedora, cheia de histórias à sua volta e sítios para descobrir, onde as pessoas são extremamente amáveis e simpáticas. A minha integração foi muito fácil, contei sempre com o apoio e a simpatia daqueles que comigo viajaram e dos irlandeses em geral. Gostei em especial da arquitectura de Belfast, da vida que a cidade proporciona, e dos típicos bares irlandeses, paragem obrigatória para sair à noite, conviver e descontrair. Recomendo vivamente a cidade de Belfast para qualquer pessoa que esteja interessada em ir lá visitar, ou inclusivamente trabalhar no futuro.
Em suma, o programa Leonardo da Vinci contribuiu de forma essencial para o meu desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional, na medida em que através dele conheci novas formas de trabalho, aprendi a ultrapassar dificuldades e deu-me a oportunidade de me relacionar com pessoas de hábitos culturais diferentes daqueles que encontro no meu país. Além do mais, permitiu-me atingir uma maior autonomia e responsabilidade. Não tenho dúvidas em como esta experiência foi para mim fundamental, inesquecível e enriquecedora. A todos aqueles que estão a ponderar inscrever-se no programa, só tenho a dizer o seguinte: “A caverna que temos medo de entrar e que não conhecemos pode conter o tesouro que precisamos de encontrar” – Joseph Campbell
