Under the tip of the iceberg

With my Baccalaureate exams finished, uncertain about my future and willing to live new experiences abroad, I decided to apply for the bursary programme of the Leonardo da Vinci project, funded by the European Commission.
It was an unexpected occurrence. Among the many candidates, I would have never dreamed to have been chosen, especially at a time when, a few months just out of secondary school I still was not in possession of a university degree which would have proven my skills. I had never experienced any kind of working experience … But the joy and desire of getting to know people, customs and cultures, day after day became ever stronger in me.
The training course included a three-month internship in Spain in the area of tourism. In Barcelona, from 21 September 2012 until early October, I attended a course of Catalan and for the other two months I ‘worked’ as a trainee at the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association), with the job of supporting teachers during the morning and evening courses of Castilian, which were aimed at immigrant adults, and of helping children aged between 6 and 16 years to do their schoolwork.
When the stage finished, very reluctantly, I abandoned Barcelona to continue my studies in Italy. Currently, I am doing Project Management in Cultural Tourism at the University of Padua, this choice being closely influenced by this amazing experience to which I owe so much.
This mobility trip made me grow up and mature not only at a professional level but also at a personal level. The fact of living in a bigger city and of living with children, whose language I did not know, highlighted my limits and my fears, but at the same time, it has made me discover some positive sides to my personality. It was a bit of a challenge with myself, which allowed me to meet and adopt new lifestyles.
Over time, you realise that you have to be more independent, autonomous and to have to have more confidence in yourself! From the professional point of view, thanks to my previous group leader experience, I have contributed in my own small way to making the children’s classroom lessons more engaging. Also, I adapted easily to a working environment by collaborating and creating a good rapport with my Catalan colleagues.
The stage, as well as making me feel in all respects a European citizen, taught me not to judge by appearances because everything that we ‘label’ is just ‘the tip of the iceberg’.
I am never going to stop talking about how important it is to participate in a project like this. Personally, I believe that, only through international exchanges, internships or volunteering abroad, can we fully understand what it means to be a ‘true European citizen’.

Finiti gli esami di maturità, incerta sul mio futuro e desiderosa di vivere nuove esperienze all’estero decido di fare domanda per la borsa di studio formativa del Progetto Leonardo da Vinci, finanziata dalla Commissione Europea.
E’ stata una partenza inaspettata. Tra i moltissimi candidati non avrei mai pensato di essere stata scelta, soprattutto nel momento in cui, diplomata da pochi mesi da un liceo linguistico non ero ancora in possesso di una laurea che attestasse le mie competenze, non avevo mai vissuto alcun tipo di esperienza lavorativa … Ma la gioia e la voglia di partire per conoscere persone, usanze e culture diverse, giorno dopo giorno diventavano in me sempre più forti.
La borsa di tirocinio prevedeva uno stage di tre mesi in Spagna nell’ ambito del Turismo. A Barcellona, dal 21 settembre 2012 fino ai primi giorni di ottobre ho frequentato un corso di catalano mentre gli altri due mesi ho “lavorato” come tirocinante presso l’associazione Ymca (Young Men’s Christian Association), con il compito di supportare gli insegnanti durante i corsi mattutini e serali di castigliano ( rivolti ad adulti immigrati) e di aiutare i ragazzi dai 6 ai 16 anni nello svolgimento dei compiti scolastici.
Terminato lo stage, a malincuore, ho abbandonato Barcellona per poter proseguire il mio percorso di studi in Italia; attualmente studio Progettazione e Gestione del Turismo Culturale presso l’Università di Padova, ma tale scelta è strettamente legata a questa straordinaria esperienza alla quale devo davvero tanto.
Questo viaggio di mobilità mi ha fatto crescere e maturare non solo al livello professionale ma anche e soprattutto a livello personale. Il fatto di vivere in una città più grande della mia e convivere con ragazzi stranieri ( di cui non consci la loro lingua ), ha messo in luce i miei limiti, le mie paure ma nel contempo mi ha fatto scoprire alcuni lati positivi della mia personalità. E’ stata un po’ una sfida con me stessa che mi ha permesso di affrontare ed adottare nuovi stili di vita ..col passare del tempo ti accorgi di essere più indipendente, autonoma ed di aver acquistato maggiore fiducia in te stessa !
Dal punto di vista professionale, grazie alle mie esperienze pregresse di animatrice, ho contribuito nel mio piccolo a rendere più accattivanti le lezioni in classe; inoltre mi sono adattata facilmente alle regole lavorative collaborando e creando un buon rapporto di amicizia con i colleghi catalani.
Lo stage, oltre ad avermi fatto sentire a tutti gli effetti una cittadina europea, mi ha insegnato che non bisogna giudicare dalle apparenze perché tutto ciò che noi “etichettiamo“ non è altro che “la punta di un iceberg” .
Non smetterò di raccontare di quanto sia importante partecipare ad un progetto come questo; personalmente, credo che solo attraverso scambi interculturali, stage internazionali o di volontariato all’estero, si possa comprendere fino in fondo che cosa significhi essere un “ Vero cittadino europeo”.
